Ping (latency) measures how long data takes to travel to a server and back, in milliseconds (ms). Lower = faster response.
- 0-20ms: Excellent — ideal for competitive gaming
- 20-50ms: Good — great for most activities
- 50-100ms: Average — acceptable for casual use
- 100-150ms: Poor — noticeable lag
- 150ms+: Bad — significant delays
Jitter measures variation in ping times. High jitter causes:
- Choppy video calls
- Audio cutting in and out
- Lag spikes in games
Ideal jitter is under 30ms.
Packet loss is when data fails to arrive. Even 1-2% causes buffering, disconnections, and frozen calls. Ideal is 0%.
